Holy shark Batman! Now I can't tell my sons that there aren't any sharks in the river. Although where we fish/collect is a little further north up river, I've seen enough shark week episodes to know Bull sharks can travel quite far up a fresh water river.

If there's one shark, you know there's gotta be more. Thanks for the story.

This thing will be in the back of my mind when wading chest deep around those deadfalls.

I'm with you on that, Kevin. I often see rays that the bull sharks eat swimming around, I think i'll keep clear of them. Though then again maybe then I can find a modern day shark tooth....

Just read the local paper down here. There were actually 2 sharks netted last week!

Hmmmm, So what is the chance of being attacked by a shark in a freshwater river? Has anyone ever heard of anyone being attacked in a freshwater river?

If you Google "shark attack river", you'll see alink which lists all of the shark attacks in the US for the last 100 years. A few were in rivers, but many many years ago. If you've ever seen shark week on Discovery channel, they always seem to dedicate one episode to Bull sharks because of their unique ability to survive in fresh water (rivers). Some have been known to travel several hundred miles up the Mississippi river. I wasn't completely shocked to learn of this recent Potomac shark (actually 2 in same day) because near where I work on the Severn river there was also a shark caught a few weeks ago on the Magothy just a few miles away. Bottom line for me is, I'm going to keep a closer eye out when I'm wading in deep water when I'm on the Potomac. Even though the two Bull sharks caught last week were several miles south of where I collect, who says that they don't come further up river, maybe even as far as the tidal basin near DC? I don't think it's anything to freak out about if you fish on the Potomac, but I think folks should be careful. It's interesting that the fisherman who caught the two Bull sharks actually caught them by accident - somehow got trapped in a large net of some sort used to catch stingrays. I wonder if you went fishing for them how difficult it would be to catch one.

I've seen those nets and man do they get those rays in there! Well, you know what to use for bait Daryl, Rhinoptera bonasus, probably best used whole. Now, the trick is to catch the bait unless you have one of those big nets!!!!

Wow, I didn't realize he caught two! I bet they find their way to the fall line at Chain Bridge now and then...

The concept of the "rogue" shark in the book and movie, Jaws, was based on the attacks that were probably that of a bull shark rather than a great white in the New Jersey attacks back in 1916. Here is a good link to the story:

http://www.semp.us/publications/biot_...

Also, there is a book about those events:

Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916

By Michael Capuzzo
