So I'm making my plans for Memorial Day and the Aurora Fossil Festival and I can't find the Washington Holiday Inn Express on the Holiday Inn website. Did they close it down? I guess it will be the Days Inn again if the Holiday Inn is out of business....

If you know the address the property is on, trying googling or mapquesting that address. Hotels change names these days like I change my socks. Have a good time at the festival!

I've always stayed at the Econo Lodge in Washington. It's great because a) it's only $46 per night and clean, b) it's right across the street from the Golden Corral, and 3) across from the Walmart. It's only a 30 minute drive from there to the museum.

Daryl.

I stayed at the Econo Lodge the last time I was there, and I liked it. So, thumbs up to Daryl's comment. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've stayed at the Days Inn a few times, but lots of drama going on in the surrounding rooms so not much for getting a good nights sleep there....lol....Hope to see everyone at the Festival

The Econolodge is clean? They must have cleaned it up since I was there...

Remember, there is also New Bern. Same distance to Aurora as Washington. And if you plan to hit the Onslow County quarries, it's 45 mins closer. There is a much better selection of restaurants as well.

Hemi - you make a very good point aboout New Bern. The only thing Washington has going for it are the lodging choices and Andy's Cheesesteaks. There's really nothing to do there otherwise. I've not been to any of the other quarries in the area, but with the continued closure of PCS I may have to try my hand at one of the others. I used to like going to Summerville before the restrictions, but the actions of a few messed it up for the rest of us. I know the surrounding area in SC doesn't have the restrictions, but I don't know the area and I'm not going to risk accidental trespassing in order to find new spots down there.....

New Bern is pretty nice as well. And you have Maysville Quarry very close at only 25 minutes away, and Onslow is another 25 minutes past that. They are (when they are opened for collecting) only open on Fridays though now. So call ahead, and spend the morning at one, and the afternoon at the other. Bring lots of water if its hot, and if there has been a lot of rain lately, prepare for mud. And the hard hat, steel toe boots are a must, and pants and as Govinn would suggest, knee and elbow pads, because the closer you get to the ground, the more you will find. Ive seen kids in those quarries as well. And definitely after a lot of rain, the fossils will be out. Ive seen some nice stuff come out of Onslow Quarry. Onslow Quarry at the moment is removing a lot of surface material in preparation for broadening the quarry. Im not sure how it will turn out, since they already dug out one of the best spots in the place, but hopefully just just expose more a little ways away.

New Bern has more things to do, but the movie theater there seemed a little sketchy to me.

Andy's is actually a local chain. New Bern has one (as does Maysville). But better than that, NB has Moore's BBQ!!! Simply the best around, imho. Should anyone stay in NB, I can (if memory serves) direct them to a few other localities that have Pleistocene shells and Native American artifacts.

Hemi,

Shoot me a message with the info on NB hunt spots please. I have 10 days to kill around the time of the Fossil Festival and need to do something. Thanks Keith.
